Poker Caddy: The dealers have their say

Friday, April 8, 2011. We go to Circle Cadet in Paris to inaugurate a new series of articles PokerNews which, as their title suggests, are intended to collect the confidences of a component usually discrete ward staff: the dealers.

Held to a strict neutrality, confined to ads on their hands in the course, dealers are familiar figures of the circle of players and casino but their states d’âme remain mysterious to most of us. After pleading our case to the Director of the Games and having explained the purpose of our approach, we have been allowed to speak with two young dealers Cadet Samuel and Siham.
Samuel and Siham, croupiers at Cadet

Samuel was hired for the opening of the Circle a year ago while Siham’s crupper to Cadet for six months. This is their first work experience both. Some dealers are trained in-house, the Circle offers a training course every month, be it poker or table games. Others are hired after they leave the IFCP, who also trains dealers Aviation Club de France.

This is the case of Samuel and Siham, who took over there a four-week course, entirely devoted to the fourteen variants of poker. This course costs € 1,600 but is now synonymous with guaranteed employment for those who choose to follow. An argument often fly and largely explains the growing success of the profession.

Both dealers were then perfect their skills directly to Cadet, starting with the Circle of tournaments, where they are made by hand. The most seasoned dealers then migrate rapidly towards the cash game tables, on which the speed of execution premium.

Their motivation

- PokerNews: Hello to you both. What made ??you embrace this profession? The buoyant market or the passion for poker?
- Samuel, the Circle All dealers are passionate about poker, without exception. Since we have no right to attend institutions within 100km of our workplace, we also regularly organized private parties between us. Otherwise, we have the Multi Reims.
- Siham: It also plays a lot on the Internet.
Schedules

- PokerNews: What are the typical hours of a dealer at Cadet?
- Siham: We did two days and two nights a week. Night hours are fixed for 21h at 6am. By day, they are ‘shift’ from 7 am (14h-21h, 15h-22h or 16h-23h). It fears a little on Friday night, which is the busiest time of the week, because of the tournament at 100 €, which regularly attracts over 100 players. As they jump, the players start to rebuild in cash and the tables of the Circle are under assault. On Friday, there are a lot of work.
- Samuel: But sometimes we are asked for extras, paid in overtime. And then it can become Rock’nRoll. When you’re off into a day and a night, you’ve worked a 15h non-stop until the morning and you go back the next day by mid-afternoon, that’s when mistakes can happen. It takes two times more vigilant …
Player I love you, I hate player

- PokerNews: What do you find more pleasant and more unpleasant in your business?
- (In unison): the players!
- PokerNews: Pleasant or unpleasant?
- (Bis): Both!
- Samuel: Every table is different. The atmosphere may also vary depending on the hour or day. At night, fatigue acts, players are at the table for several hours. In the afternoon, they are usually the coolest.
Overall, the table the better in dealer is the final table of a tournament. It is often the most serious players who are going further, we do not need to remind them to ask the antes or it’s their turn. Ca channel, everyone is happy. In a cash game, they have money to put them, you feel this tension more. And then, of course, the character of each is different. It was our favorite. This does not prevent us to remain absolutely neutral. But we know that with some players, the job will be enjoyable.
- Siham: Me, what I like best is the atmosphere among colleagues. Everyone gets along really well. The hardest to manage, sometimes, what are the hours. And some players. Although most are not rude old bones. Their membership cards are quickly terminated.
Memories …

- PokerNews: Your best memory of Cadet?
- Samuel: The ‘ Stars On Fire ‘! Having celebrities at the table, it was very nice, the atmosphere was on top. We wait impatiently for the next.
- Siham, the evening of New Year was also cool. Champagne, party menu, the atmosphere was more relaxed than usual. I have excellent memories.

- PokerNews: And your worst memory?
- (Both, unanimous): The first days of work. We were beginners croupiers and regulars understand very quickly. They watched as a young man they do not know, then they test you.
- Siham: Yes, at first I was a bit ashamed, I was super-tight. And when players have fun making false reminders or ‘string bets’ (made in two stages) to see how you’ll react, it further complicates things. But hey, I’m a girl …
- PokerNews: And …?
- Siham: Honestly, it is more advantageous. The players are nicer. It lets you more things. There’s even one who asked me to take me on vacation! But a dealer does not take bribes (laughs). Well, sometimes the opposite. A week ago, for example, a player has left the table furious after losing a big blow. And he said aloud, with a Dealer hand man, he would have won! Well, do not let destabilize. And that kind of stuff rarely happens anyway.
A little foresight

- PokerNews: How do you see yourself in five years?
- Samuel: The goal for now is to accumulate experience. But eventually, I will try to move up the hierarchy. After the dealer, there are assistant floor and floor manager and then .. (Pause) Is there anything after, Siham? Something like ‘Great Spirit’. It suits me well, this.
- Siham: I would like to work abroad. To improve my English and changing environment. But it does not look simple, because of national laws. In Vegas, for example, your employer must prove that there was no American is available at your post on the market before they may seek your services. In short, it is almost impossible, whatever.

- PokerNews: You told me that the busiest time of the week came on Friday evening. A Cadet, there are others?
- Samuel: These are the tournaments in the afternoon that often attract the most people, compared to the buy-in very ‘soft’ (30 € for 15h, Monday to Thursday). Here too, it can exceed 100 players. So the afternoon is ‘shielded’. On Friday evening there is also a lot of people, probably more so than in the afternoon, counting the cash tables. But there are more dealers on deck, so it goes. Otherwise, we notice that things calm down a bit at the end of the month, players will have less money to spend. And then you’re off again next month.
Superstitions at the table

- PokerNews: Last question, superstitions at the table. You see them?
- Siham: Sure! Well, the most classic is the player who always dressed in exactly the same way that keeps his favorite T-shirt for example. Or has a guard card that serves gri-gri. But I noticed that superstitions were also often on the chips or cards. There are guys who can not bear anyone to touch their cards, wanting to discard their own. Or one that will absolutely take to recover ‘his’ chips. Rather than asking rebuy chips in new floor, he’ll go spinning his money to the player who has Freezeout him to refile the other chips it had before. It’s crazy …

- PokerNews: A final word on Cadet to conclude?
- Samuel is a circle that has a true identity, which has set a mood. Both serious and casual. Where you feel good, to work as for play.
- Siham: And then it’s probably the best gaming circles of the capital. The framework is unique, it really works in ideal conditions.

- PokerNews: Thank you! And now, at work ….

Samuel McMaster, the scammer poker player

In addition to Bernard Madoff, Samuel McMaster figure is small but this amateur player poker is still going to spend the next twelve years behind bars.
McMaster scam to play poker

In August 2010, Samuel Junior McMaster acknowledged Scamming seniors 26 and pleaded guilty to fraud charges brought against him. The poker player of 59 years asked clients of his company to invest in promissory notes and certificates of deposit and used the money to fatten his bankroll (money for poker). In the end, McMaster has diverted $ 440,000.
Broken promise

Stopped, the scammer still managed to avoid immediate incarceration by promising to repay $ 450,000 by winning money at poker tables. Something that has absolutely not done since his tournament winnings amount to $ 31,642 and only $ 1,461 from the year 2010. Wednesday, April 6, the Court of the State of New Mexico ended the joke by condemning McMaster to 12 years in prison.

“It was a long wait,” said J. Dee Dennis, Jr., Superintendent of the Department of Regulation and Licensing of the State of New Mexico. “This guy wanted to rip us off by making us believe that would give free help victims recover their money. “

HU Poker – Phil Hellmuth Dusty Schmidt and soon the ring?

The 42th WSOP could well be part of a top flight clash between two heavyweights of poker. Or so that seems like Dusty “leatherass” Schmidt, who recently invited to play Phil Hellmuth heads-up a meeting for a sum of money “considerable” and chose Las Vegas for this possible event. It only remains whether this proposal actually returns a particular challenge as we find often in the middle of the poker, or if it is just a simple business strategy to create buzz the last book published by Schmidt, “” Do not Listen To Phil Hellmuth: Poker’s 50 Greatest Correcting Misconceptions. ”
Dusty Schmidt, round leather millionaire

Dusty “leatherass” Schmidt is a man who was perpetually on the rise. Deprived of a promising career in golf after a cardiac event, Schmidt managed to make a dramatic conversion in poker.

Trained in cash game sessions online marathons and multi-tabling mass, Schmidt played more than 9 million poker hands reached Supernova Elite status on Pokerstars.com, accumulated several million dollars in profits and beat the record world’s largest winrate on tables no limit hold’em $ 5 / $ 10 and $ 10 / $ 20 in 2007 and 2008.

Rookie of the Online Team PokerStars Pro who has seen his contract renewed a few days ago, has also transposed his expertise on site coaching and DragTheBar.com through his first book titled “Treat Your Business Like A Poker” which has met with notable success in the gaming community.

Do not listen to Phil Hellmuth

On December 6, 2010, Schmidt published his second book and chose for his book a provocative title: “Do not Listen To Phil Hellmuth: The 50 Worst Correcting Pieces of Advice You’ve Ever Heard Poker” (Do not listen to what is said Phil Hellmuth or correction of the 50 worst strategic advice you’ve ever heard about poker).

By choosing Phil Hellmuth as a scapegoat, Schmidt and inaugurated in the field of poker literature a unique marketing strategy. If the mention of the name of one of the most publicized players of the last decade would certainly cause a buzz of hell around his book, Schmidt wanted above all to convey a strong message, signifying the end of the reign of champions past and certainties about the game and its strategy.

This idea of ??HU is still a provocation on the part of Schmidt or to demonstrate a real commitment by A + B is the truth of the contents of his book by crushing Hellmuth flat seam? For Schmidt could well prove to be the favorite in this hypothetical encounter. He also said in a pod cast posted on its website dustyschmidt.net:

“I hope this conttre Hellmuth heads-up will take place. I could not imagine finding an opponent weaker than itself and now I am ready to face off for a large sum of money and put in the middle of the table $ 100,000 without batting an eyelid. ”

If this heads-up does occur, it will obviously be closely monitored by members of the poker community and the fans. It’s a safe bet that some players will not hesitate to put some side bet on the outcome of the match.

Howard Lederer: maneuvering a side-pot

Howard Lederer, founder member of Team Full Tilt pros, for PokerNews discusses the concept of side pots (side pots) in tournament poker Sit’n gos no-limit hold’em.

Howard Lederer: Today I go back on a hand I played during the show Poker After Dark, where I had to maneuver to a side pot against a solid player.

Gabe Kaplan was very short stack and first floor. The blinds 300/600, he found a decent hand with and decided to go all in for his last 2500 chips. Mark Gregorich button with the following pair of Five. Others might have revived here, but this does not seem to be bothered because it followed a six-player SnG and the goal is to eliminate one of the participants.

I discover and I thought Mark out the coup, but he could make a slow-play with Kings or Aces, hoping that I re-raise, so I just paid, which also maximizes the chances of leaving Gabe.
The flop came with Offering a dual-pair Gabe but here is what happened at the main pot is irrelevant. The rest of the labor concerns of course the side-pot. It’s one of those bizarre situations in tournaments where a player is carpet and it remains the action between two other players involved.

Mark put 3000 on the flop which is unusual, but perhaps he hopes to have the best game or to fold a pair better than his own, hoping that Gabe has only Queen or King-Queen-Jack. I had to make that move cautiously knowing that Mark is a solid player and he banked for a side-pot empty. My only option was to follow after speech.

The turn was a and we both made floor to see the river This has led to an interesting situation and a good opportunity to get paid. I need to defend myself for not having to pay a big bet and put myself in a difficult spot, so I decided to make a small bet of 1,600 hoping to be paid by less well with an ace.

So there were 13,000 in the middle but Mark and I were playing for 6,000, so my bet representing one quarter of the side-pot. By leveraging this amount I do not have to pay a big bet if I speak and I can fold if reraised Mark because he never bluff on this one.

Mark slept his hand and I showed to take the side pot and return to my cost. Gabe, for its part managed to turn the situation and win the sit-n-go, one more example proving that you should never give up in these situations end of tournaments.
